Why Is Gentleness So Hard?

Those times when you don’t see eye to eye with a person. Maybe someone has hurt your feelings where you are unable to think clearly. Driving on the freeway and someone cuts you off. These are the things acting in gentleness is not our first reaction. Yet in Titus 3:2, we are told;

 to speak evil of no one,to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people.

What a hard verse to swallow. As we live out our Christian faith Paul list 4 things that we need to do. When you stop and think about it, they all deal with the fruit of the Spirit – Gentleness. Gentle people will not speak evil of someone, it is not in them. Of course, they are going to avoid quarreling. They are the perfect example of courtesy towards all people.

Like all the other Spiritual Fruit, Gentleness needs Love to grow.  When you look at it Gentleness is Love’s little sister. It is a lot easier to react in gentleness when you are filled with His love. Like my pastor said Sunday, “Loved people love people.”  I am so thankful for those people that have the Spiritual Fruit of Gentleness abounding in their life because there are times I need them to show me how to be gentle.

    Love this: “When you look at it Gentleness is Love’s little sister.” I consider myself a very gentle person and then realize that I am not so gentle in impatient situations like traffic or trying to communicate homework solutions, etc., to my kids. Great reflection! Thank you!
