Heart Plans

Deep down in your heart what is your plan? Is it to write a book? Paint a masterpiece? Run a marathon? Or is God talking about something different here? When you look up Proverbs 20:5 in the ESV, NSAB and NKJV; you get three different words.

The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water,
    but a man of understanding will draw it out.  ESV

A plan in the heart of a man is like deep water,
But a man of understanding draws it out.   NSAB

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water,
But a man of understanding will draw it out.   NKJV

The Hebrew word – etsah – means all three words; purpose, plan and counsel.

When you stop to think about it all three of the words come down to focus. What is the focus of your heart?  Jesus put it:

No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. Matthew 6:24 ESV

Who do you purpose, plan, seek counsel from in your heart?

Does keeping up with the latest fad moe important than spending time with God? Are you burning the candle at both ends, yet God is not part of that time?  Who are you serving?
What are your plans focused on?

We lie to ourselves about tomorrow I’ll spend more time, get up early, maybe even spend less time on Facebook and make moe time for God. The rest of the verse in Proverbe says that you have to have understanding to draw it out. The Hebrew word for understanding is – towbunah – it means – intelligence, discreation, reason, skillfulness, understanding and wisdom.

When you look at Jeremiah 17:9 NKJV;

The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;
Who can know it?

You see how the Hebrew word, towbunah, is more than just understanding. We really need to have all that it means to find the plan, purpose and counsel ofour hearts.
