I Have Protected Them

This morning as I woke up the realization that I have a 21-year-old son hit. I have done my best raise him up as a godly man and am very proud of the man that he has become. Then I read what Jesus had prayed for His disciples in John 17. He understands the heart of a mom.

As Jesus was getting ready to die on the cross,  He knew He had done His best to “raise them up.” Now, He was concerned for them as they would soon be in this world all by themselves. He had to trust them to in the capable hands of the Father.

As I look closer at verse 9, Jesus stated that He is praying for those that the Father has given Him and no longer for the world. As a mom, I need to shift my prayers too. I need to be more like Jesus. I raised him to follow You, keep him safe as he goes out into this world.

Cutting the apron strings can be hard. Jesus knows what it is like. He had to do it too. Knowing that He wouldn’t be there to still give them advice and instruction had to be harder than what we moms have to go through. At least we are just a phone call away.

So remember moms, when it comes time for our children to go out in this world on their own, Jesus knows what we are feeling. Remember Hebrews 4:15,

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

So when we get tempted to hold on tight to our kids, we need to follow the example of Jesus and pray for them. For He knows what we are going through.

Great reminder. I’m a few years away from my kids leaving the nest but I do need to wrap my mind around the fact that I’m raising them to let them go.
