Look at how many different sports require helmets to play. All the focus to protect the brain from injury. Physical injury is not the only thing that can hinder our thought processes, we have an enemy that loves to mess with our mind. He might try to get us distracted by making us too busy. He could use the attack making us feel that we aren’t good enough. It could be a major trial in our life and he just keeps attacking our thoughts that God really doesn’t care about you… Like in this picture we can be going through the still waters in life and suddenly we hit the white waters of trials.
Although 1 Thessalonians 5 is talking about the when the Lord will return, I do believe that can also apply to everyday life. We go along when things are fine not really thinking about being blindsided by the enemy then we get an attack that can really shake our faith. In 1Peter 5:8 we warned to be on the alert, that means we don’t just go with the flow we are looking out for the next attack and ready for it to come.
Interesting in that both 1Peter 5:8 and 1 Thessalonians 5:8, both remind us to be sober, on alert. We are not to sit back when things are going great but be ready, looking for the next attack. Not only looking but preparing for it.
What better depiction of a breastplate and helmet than a football player. His chest protection to protect his lungs and heart. His helmet to protect his brain. In Ephesians 6:11, we are take up the armor of God. God has given us the armor that we need to fight the enemy but it does us no good if we do not act and put it on it will do us no good just like this football player doesn’t put on his gear before a game will be unable to be any good to his team during the game. It is by praying daily do we put on the armor of God.
Both the breastplate and the helmet protect vital areas on us. In 1 Thessalonians, we see that the breastplate covers the heart where our emotions are. Faith and love go hand in hand. Faith is what holds on to love, and together keep they keep our emotions in check. Faith that God is in control so we don’t have to worry, stress, panic… over what is going on. The love of God ruling over our hearts gives us the ability to look at and reach out to those that we might not do on our own.
The helmet of the hope of salvation protects our thoughts. As we keep our thoughts on Jesus, we keep our focus on the foundation of our salvation. With a foundation based on the Rock it can’t be shaken and our hope no matter what helps us to be grounded in not only our thoughts but emotions. We must keep Jesus and His words in our mind by listening to music, reading the Bible and listening to the Word of God being in taught.
So daily don’t forget to start your day by putting on your protection to fight off the attacks.
