How To Lighten Your Heart

Things happen in our lives that can weight us down, from the death of a family member or friend, dealing with a special needs child, finances, to what is going on in the world around us. So how do we deal with a heavy heart when it is weighed down? Let’s look a Psalm 119 and see what we find.

First thing is to go to God’s Word. In verse 116, we see; “my heart stands in awe of your words.” Not only do we find testimonies of what He has done for others, we find His promises, precepts, peace, and His love. His word is true. When you find a verse shining a light into your heart, write it down and post it everywhere to remind you.

Next praise Him. You may say, “I don’t feel like it.” “What do I have to praise Him for?” In 2 Corinthians 1:20 ESV, we are given one reason to praise Him; “For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.” Here is one well-known promise found in Romans 8:28; “and we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

Thirdly, sing to God. “But, you don’t want to hear me sing.” God already answered that excuse in Psalm 98:4 ESV; “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises!” Yes, the Lord wants your noise because He wants to hear from you. In the 70’s, The Carpenters had a song called “Sing” even echoes it.

 Sing, sing a song
Sing out loud
Sing out strong
Sing of good things not bad
Sing of happy not sad.

Sing, sing a song
Make it simple to last
Your whole life long
Don’t worry that it’s not
Good enough for anyone
Else to hear
Just sing, sing a song.

Paul sums this all up in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18; “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
